Mathieu Bodmer is expected to become Caen’s sporting director after quitting Le Havre on Sunday, a move that would take him from Ligue 1 to the National, which will be renamed Ligue 3 next season.
An agreement is understood to have been in place for several days, so the former centre-back may not be out of work for long. After Le Havre’s 2-0 win at Lorient sealed survival, he confirmed a break with new owners Blue Crow Sports Group and said internal issues had led him to stop.
His resignation baffled some inside the club, the timing surprised many and is said to have taken the edge off celebrations. “It is hard to take,” said coach Didier Digard, “and once again everything is being called into question, starting with the stability that could have helped us,” he told Paris-Normandie.
Clarity is not guaranteed at Caen either. Kylian Mbappé, via his fund Coalition Capital, did not prevent relegation from Ligue 2 in 2025, nor deliver an immediate return this season, with the team finishing eighth.
Bodmer knows the club well, having come through its academy and made his professional debut there. He would likely reunite with Nasser Larguet, one of his early mentors, who is expected to join in an advisory capacity.
Changes could follow. Technical director Pascal Plancque and head of recruitment Reda Hammache are thought to be leaving, and president Ziad Hammoud is said to have consulted local entrepreneurs about a successor, while Gaël Clichy’s future remains to be clarified as his remit has grown since December. For Bodmer, the task would be to haul Caen out of Ligue 3 quickly.
