Borussia Dortmund have held firm against Real Madrid in Saturday’s Champions League final, thanks in part to Mats Hummels.
The veteran defender remained a reassuring presence for Edin Terzić’s side in the first half of the Wembley showpiece and added his name to the record books.
He became only the second centre-back to rack up more than 50 challenges in a single campaign of Europe’s elite club competition that carried a potential omen.
Not since Lúcio in 2009/10 has anyone come close to matching that feat prior to Hummels’ rock-solid display during the opening 45 minutes.
The Brazilian was also part of the team that stunned favourites Bayern Munich to claim the 2010 final under José Mourinho. Will lighting strike twice?
