“I will miss it - I will miss it terribly.” Mats Hummels is retiring from professional football at the end of the 2024/25 season. The current AS Roma player has published a video on his social media channels concerning his decision.
While looking back on some highlights of his career, Hummels said: “When I see all this, I know how much this whole journey, this whole path has meant to me; how extraordinary it was to be able to experience that.”
The 36-year-old made his debut in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich in 2007. Since then he has played 508 games (in all competitions) for Borussia Dortmund, 118 games for Bayern Munich, 78 games for Germany and (currently) 18 games for Roma.
“It takes a lot, just having the right coaches at the right time, being fit at the right time, having the right teammates at the right time - and I've seen so many guys, so many coaches, who I owe a lot to”, said Hummels in rememberance of his career.
“Without them, my whole career would never have gotten off the ground or reached this level”, continued Hummels.
The centre-back has won many trophies in his career, including 6 Bundesliga titles (4x Bayern, 2x Dortmund), 4 DFB-Pokal titles (2x Bayern, 2x Dortmund) and most famously the triumph in the 2014 World Cup with Germany.
