Matt Doherty has left Wolves after his contract expired this summer, ending a 13-year association across two spells. The Irish defender, 34, made 389 appearances for the club. He was not offered a new deal.

Wolves labelled him a club legend and confirmed he becomes a free agent. He departs as the 16th highest appearance maker in the club’s history.

Technical director Matt Jackson praised Doherty as emblematic of Wolverhampton Wanderers, highlighting consistent standards on the pitch and leadership off it, and his rise from raw teenager to the squad’s most senior figure.

Jackson called him a model for young players who built a career at the highest level alongside international football, a dependable voice in the dressing room, and a pleasure to work with. He wished Doherty the very best for the future.

Doherty joined in 2010 and established himself under Kenny Jackett as Wolves won promotion from League One in 2013/14.

Integral under Nuno Espirito Santo, he helped deliver Premier League promotion, two seventh-place finishes, an FA Cup semi-final and a Europa League quarter-final. He left for Spurs in 2020, had a brief spell at Atletico Madrid, then returned in 2023.

His departure now draws his Wolves career to a close.
