Matt Doherty targets Premier League return after Sheffield United move | OneFootball

Matt Doherty has targeted a Premier League return after signing a one-year deal at Sheffield United, which includes an option for another 12 months.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 34-year-old left Wolves on a free this summer after 13 years across two spells, and will face his old club in the Championship under Chris Wilder.

Doherty said Wilder’s vision and the Bramall Lane atmosphere persuaded him to join, and he is backing the manager to take the club back to the Premier League, which he believes is the shared aim.

The Republic of Ireland international has 53 caps and made 389 Wolves appearances, split between 2010 to 2020 and 2023 to 2026, with spells at Tottenham and Atletico Madrid in between.

Signed by Wolves for £75,000 from Bohemians in 2010, he won League One and Championship titles and played in Europe. Wolves labelled him a club legend on his departure.

Sheffield United finished 13th in the Championship last season. Wilder believes Doherty’s experience and professionalism can raise standards in the squad.
