Matt Doherty leaves Wolves as a modern club legend, his 13-year, two-spell stay bringing 389 appearances, 16th all time.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 34-year-old was not offered a new deal and leaves as a free agent. Signed for £75,000 from Bohemians in 2010, he helped lift Wolves from League One to the Europa League.

At Newcastle on 9 December 2018, Diogo Jota’s driving run forced a save and Doherty arrived late to head a 94th-minute winner for a 2-1 success.

At Wembley on 7 April 2019, Wolves let a 2-0 lead slip to Watford in the FA Cup semi-final. Earlier, in the first half, a short-corner move led to a deep cross and Doherty stole in at the far post to head the opener, sending the end into raptures.

On 27 December 2019, he settled a classic at Molineux. Ederson was dismissed early, Raheem Sterling made it 2-0, then Adama Traore scored and set up Raul Jimenez to level. Doherty exchanged passes with Jimenez and stroked in left-footed on 89 minutes, and Molineux erupted.

In Wolves’ first season back in the Premier League he scored eight and supplied 10. He added involvement in another 12 goals the following year, underlining his influence as an attacking wing-back.

He departs with 33 goals and 41 assists, and a reputation as a model professional, widely liked and respected inside the club.
