Matt Hamshaw in a make or break following three impressive unbeaten games. Now is the time to step up and propel themselves up the table
Rotherham United are unbeaten in three, coming from behind to win in two of those and also managing their long-awaited first away win of the season – all of which is coming at an opportune moment for Matt Hamshaw.
With the £1 million man and last season’s top scorer, Sam Nombe, returning from injury, alongside other key players such as Sean Raggett and Thomas Holmes returning in the near future, Rotherham are in a key position to push up the table.
Following a poor start to the season, Hamshaw has found his side in the bottom three places – but a positive result against a strong Leyton Orient side this weekend could take them mid-table.
This is inevitably Hamshaw’s biggest goal as, with this upturn in form, the pressure has alleviated from above on his position as Rotherham manager.
Rotherham find themselves in the bottom three of League One — relegation places for a side who were in the Championship only two seasons ago.
But this position is not entirely faithful to the way Rotherham have conducted themselves at times this season.
The Millers are scoring goals that teams at the top end of the League would be thoroughly impressed by.
Fluid, sharp and direct, Rotherham are not finding it tough to create chances at one end of the pitch and with the return of Nombe, should be comfortable putting the ball away.
Alongside Nombe, Rotherham have found another potential starlet amongst their summer signings in the form of 6’4" Martin Sherif, loaned in from Everton to boost the forward line.
Sherif is another player capable of finding the back of the net, having done so twice in his early career with the Millers – another player full of pace and power that looks to complement Nombe fantastically on paper.
As for creativity, Josh Benson and Ar'jany Martha are proving themselves to be at the heart of moves for Rotherham. Tricky, technical players who have fantastic pedigrees from previous clubs are starting to pull strings for the Millers, as evidenced by their performances against Bradford City and Northampton.
Rotherham have proven their ability to be a team that can challenge at the top end of the league when their forward play clicks. However, the Millers are still susceptible in their own third of the pitch.
Matt Hamshaw is now in a state of make-or-break as his side has shown its ability to perform up to par with those teams far above them, leading for most of the game against table-topping Bradford City.
Those types of performances are setting the standard for which Hamshaw will be well on his way to making it as Rotherham manager. A young, ambitious, driven manager coaching a youthful, energetic side is the premise of what Millers’ fans have been asking for since the successful Paul Warne left.
Similarly, if Hamshaw were to allow these standards to slip, there is little further the Millers can fall than to League Two. Still, being in the relegation places serves as a reminder that the work has just begun for Hamshaw, and although only a few points off mid-table, he will be prepared to improve on those standards already set.
With players returning from injury at vital times and key players returning to form, Hamshaw has little to no excuses if his team was to slip further down the table or into deeper trouble. It is now all down to him, and the players he has at his disposal, to produce performances and grind out results to propel themselves further up the table.
A truly make-or-break situation now for Hamshaw, a manager who is showing real promise who should now be judged on the potential he has shown – baring any slip-ups, it could prove to be a truly great appointment by Rotherham as they propel up the table.
