Matt Law of The Telegraph has been explaining how he has heard that Xabi Alonso basically has a sporting director role at Chelsea.
As we know, Alonso has been called ‘manager’ at Chelsea rather than a head coach, which is what Chelsea and most clubs actually, have been calling their managers for some time now, insisting that they are just their to coach the first team rather than have any real say in what goes on in within football operations at a club.
Well, it looks like Alonso is going to be backed with much more power than the previous managers that came before him at Chelsea.
Law has been speaking on the London is Blue Podcast this week, and obviously Alonso was a big subject.

“I’d never had it explained to me before in terms of any of the other head coaches in the Blueco era. Xabi Alonso is basically now part of this football leadership team. You know, we call them the five sporting directors.”
This is great news really. And they need to give Alonso all the power because he’s already the most intelligent football person in the room.
Joao Pedro is being linked with Barcelona – and will apparently make it clear to Chelsea that he wants to join them. A €100m fee is being spoken about for Chelsea to let him go.
Andrey Santos was delighted with his first Premier League goal for Chelsea. He’s explained a funny story about what his Wife said to him after the game.
