After suffering a dismal relegation from the Premier League last term, in which they picked up just two victories throughout 38 games, the Saints arrived back in the Championship eager to win football matches regularly once more.

That hasn’t been the case however, with the South Coast outfit winning just one of their opening six matches, drawing three and losing twice to find themselves languishing 19th in the second-tier standings.

With talented players such as Adam Armstrong, Cameron Archer and Tom Fellows in their ranks, this isn’t where anybody at Southampton would’ve expected to be at this stage in the season.

Naturally, pressure has started to build on the new manager, Will Still.

The 32-year-old gained a strong reputation after success in French football with Lens and Reims, which led to much excitement among the Southampton fanbase when he was appointed as the man to lead them forward this season.

Supporters have already voiced their concerns about Still’s managerial ability, and now one of the Saints’ greatest ever players has weighed in on the situation too.

Matt Le Tissier scored 209 goals in 540 games for Southampton and is a certified legend at St. Mary’s.

Following the Saints’ shocking start to the season, the 56-year-old has revealed what Still and Co. must do to get their campaign back on track.

“It's been a disappointing start in terms of points,” stated Le Tissier to the Daily Echo. “The biggest issue for me is the fact the squad changed so much late in the window.

“We've sold two of our best young talents [Matty Fernandes, Tyler Dibling] and obviously had to make some late replacements. They've come in. Now it's Will's job to get them to settle into a formation that they're comfortable with and for Will to find out what his best team is.

“I would say you want at least seven points in these next three games," added Le Tissier. "It's been a poor start in terms of points returned so far. We've dropped points in games we probably shouldn't have done. So, I think it's important that we are certainly unbeaten over these next three games.

"Once they start flowing, I think we have the ability to go on a long unbeaten run again, like we did the last time we were in the Championship.”

Southampton have the ability to turn their situation around

Although the season hasn’t started brilliantly for Southampton, there is still plenty of football left to play and therefore lots of time for them to find their form.

After such a dismal 2024/25 campaign in the Premier League, confidence may still be lacking within some members of the Saints’ dressing room, who are so used to losing that it has had a major impact on their morale.

It is now up to Still to turn this around, which may be a task easier said than done.

The South Coast outfit’s league position is not representative of the quality they have in their ranks, and over time, that should begin to balance itself out.

There are talented operators in every department of Still’s squad, and he must learn how to get them playing in unison. If the 32-year-old is successful, Southampton could soon start breezing past teams, much like they did last time they were in the second-tier.

League leaders Middlesbrough could prove to be a tough test for the Saints, but getting a result in that clash would surely be a massive source of confidence and motivation for everyone within the Southampton camp, showing that they have what it takes to go toe to toe with the division’s most in-form side.
