Atlético de Madrid have confirmed that new signing Matteo Ruggeri will wear the number 3 shirt for the 2025/26 season, as the Italian defender begins his career at the Civitas Metropolitano.
Ruggeri, who joined Atlético from Atalanta earlier this summer, spoke of his pride and excitement at becoming part of Diego Simeone’s squad. The 23-year-old full-back is considered one of Italy’s most promising young talents and arrives in the Spanish capital ready to make his mark.
“Joining this club is a dream because it’s one of the best in the world,” Ruggeri said. “I’m looking forward to starting my journey here and trying to win, for example, LaLiga.”
The Italy international also expressed his admiration for Atlético manager Diego Simeone, citing the Argentine’s influence as a key factor in his decision to move.
“For me, it’s an honour to have a coach like Simeone; he impressed me from the very beginning,” Ruggeri added. “I love his way of coaching and his style. When I realised I had the chance to join this magnificent club, I was thrilled to become part of such a great team.”
The number 3 shirt at Atlético has previously been worn by iconic figures such as Filipe Luís, and Ruggeri will be hoping to emulate the success of those who came before him in the red and white stripes.
With Ruggeri’s arrival and shirt number now official, Atlético supporters will be eager to see the Italian in action as the club continues its preparations for the new campaign.
