We have faced Aston Villa on 14 occasions since 2016, although Saturday’s clash at Brisbane Road will be the first time we have met in the Women’s League Cup.
We’ve met nine times in the Barclays Women’s Super League since Villa were promoted to England’s top flight in June, 2020, with us winning on three occasions, including an impressive 4-2 victory at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium last season as Martha Thomas claimed a hat-trick to send us top of the table at the time.
Four of our meetings came in the FA Women’s Championship and arguably one of our most memorable encounters against Villa came in the second tier for the 2018/19 campaign as a 1-1 draw at Boldmere St Michaels saw us secure promotion to the WSL for the first time.
A super strike from Jess Naz in the first minute gave us a dream start before an equaliser from Amy West after the break created a nervy 40 minutes but, despite a goal-line clearance from Ashleigh Neville in the final seconds of the game, we held on for a point and that was enough to claim a promotion spot.
Our only other fixture outside of the WSL and Championship was a fourth round tie in the Women’s FA Cup in February, 2016, with Villa running out 3-2 winners after extra-time.
