Matthias Ginter says he spoke with new Germany head coach Jürgen Klopp after being left out of the latest squad.

"Very good and appreciative," Ginter said, speaking to kicker. "Age is simply the decisive issue for me, because I would be 34 at the next tournament."

"You can still play good football at 34," he said. "But given the age structure and the many good, younger players in my position, it is absolutely understandable to me."

Ginter has not played for Germany since June 2023 and was also overlooked by former head coach Julian Nagelsmann for the 2026 World Cup. He has started well for Freiburg, with five scorer points in six competitive matches.

The 32-year-old has 51 caps and was part of the 2014 World Cup-winning squad. He also won Olympic silver in 2016 and the Confederations Cup in 2017.

He worked under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund. "I had nine very nice years with the national team," Ginter said. "At the moment, it feels complete and free."

Klopp's first squad contains 44 players as he assesses options, with seven centre-backs, including Ginter's Freiburg teammate Max Rosenfelder.
