Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri insists he would have vacated his post immediately had he encountered similar circumstances at any other club.

The Background

The 66-year-old enjoyed a largely successful first tenure at the club that lasted almost three years, before resigning in March 2024. The Italian tactician then made his return to Formello after 15 months of inactivity, describing it as a heartfelt decision.

Unfortunately for Sarri, his Lazio comeback swiftly turned sour, as the club was slapped with a transfer ban that denied him the opportunity to bolster his squad with much-needed reinforcement.

Maurizio Sarri Only Stayed Out of Love for Lazio

The manager held a press conference ahead of Sunday’s away fixture against Atalanta (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), and he revealed that he was only willing to accept these conditions due to his great bond with Lazio and the fanbase.

What I’ve done till now, I would have only done it for one club. If another had told me they couldn’t make any moves on the market after signing a contract, I would have definitely left immediately. But at Lazio, I had serious qualms about doing so. This strength isn’t abandoning me, despite the difficulties and the daily curses I’m forced to utter. I still firmly believe in developing this group and bringing out seven or eight players who can play at a high level.

Sarri Provides Updates on Injured Lazio Stars

Sarri also offered some updates on his ever-growing list of injuries that includes key players like Taty Castellanos, Mattia Zaccagni and Nicolo Rovella.

Dia has had an ankle problem for three years, the muscular problems are all different, and Marusic’s isn’t even an injury, just an old scar from years ago. It’s difficult to explain. Zaccagni is coming off a difficult summer, the situation is complicated. Taty needs four of five weeks to recover. Dele-Bashiru is still under the medical supervision; he has a final check-up next week. It will take a few days before he can rejoin us, at least partially. Isaksen played two matches with the national team, but we didn’t like his performances in training, so we kept him on a very low workload. He’s fine, he returned in good spirits.

The New Pitches at Formello

The manager ruled out the theory that accused the newly-renovated training pitches at Formello of causing harm.

The possibility that a player might have a muscle problem because he trained here seems unlikely to me. We had a problem with the pitches about ten days ago, but now they’re ready; they’re both good-quality pitches. Something may have affected them during those ten days, but it was a temporary issue. It’s difficult to make a thorough assessment with definitive confirmation; injuries are a mix of old ailments and different muscle groups.
