Mauro Furtado is close to leaving Benfica for Girona, with the 18-year-old centre-back set for a part-sale move worth €1m for 50 per cent of his rights.

Record reports that Girona would also hold an option to acquire a further 30 per cent for €600,000, and that a contract through to 2031 awaits the defender as final details are settled.

Furtado rose to prominence at the Under-17 World Cup in Doha, winning the title with Portugal. He was named player of the final against Austria and finished as the tournament’s third best player.

Despite the excitement around his potential, he did not earn a prominent role at Benfica. He was not included in the B team squad for this season, unlike Rafael Quintas, Stevan Manuel and Tomás Soares.

His exit follows repeated rejections of renewal proposals from the club. With his contract running to 2027 and no agreement reached, Benfica have moved to secure some financial return.

Furtado is expected to continue his development in Spain’s second tier with Girona, who are targeting a return to La Liga.
