Union Berlin have appointed Mauro Lustrinelli as coach, replacing Marie-Louise Eta.

Eta’s interim ended with a 4-0 win against Augsburg on the 34th and final day of the Bundesliga, and she is set to take charge of the women’s team next season. The club said on its website that Lustrinelli is eager for the challenge, describing Union as a special club with strong values, and that he is motivated to begin alongside the hierarchy, staff, supporters and the team.

The club from east Berlin have again looked to Switzerland, mirroring their 2018 move for Urs Fischer from FC Bâle.

After Union’s surge under Fischer between 2018 and 2023, from promotion to successive European qualifications, they may now have found an heir to that blueprint.

Lustrinelli, 50, arrives from FC Thoune after leading the promoted side to a historic Swiss Super League title this season.
