Atlas’ newest signing Mauro Manotas will likely be out for the season after injuring the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee. He is expected to undergo surgery in the coming weeks.
The player picked up the ACL tear during Atlas’ 0-0 season-opener against Club America at the Estadio Azteca, coming off the pitch in the 55th minute with the help of the medical corps.
The club confirmed a recovery timeline will be provided after his procedure.
“A lot of strength, Mauro! Everyone at the Mexican Soccer Academy is convinced that you will return soon and stronger,” said the club in a statement.
Manotas had just arrived as the team’s third signing of the window after one season with Tijuana, where he managed five goals in 17 matches. Given his limited involvement with the reigning league champions, head coach Diego Cocca should have no problem finding alternative options.
Cocca will likely continue leaning on Julián Quiñones and Jonathan Herrera to lead the attack, as starting figure Julio Furch also recovers from injury.
The team returns to action on Sunday when confronting Toluca at Estadio Nemesio Díez for the second match of the 2022 Liga MX Apertura.
