Mauro Xavier has demanded that the facts be established and the VAR audio be released immediately after the contentious draw at Famalicão, intensifying Benfica’s anger at the officiating.
According to Glorioso 1904, the prominent Benfica supporter criticised referee Gustavo Correia on social media and pressed for transparency over a penalty incident.
He referred to a moment when Andreas Schjelderup crossed into the box and the ball was deliberately blocked by right-back Rodrigo Pinheiro. Neither Correia nor the VAR team deemed an offence, prompting outrage on the Benfica bench.
Xavier argued the episode was too clear to be a normal error, saying incompetence should be admitted and any bad faith investigated and punished. He added it was four points with this referee.
Benfica drew 2-2 in Famalicão. The club went into a media blackout after Correia’s final whistle, with no players or staff speaking. Later, president Rui Costa voiced his displeasure to reporters, alleging the referee had harmed Benfica.
