Teenage sensation Max Dowman scored twice for Arsenal U19s in their 4-3 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Youth League on Tuesday afternoon.
Dowman had not featured for Arsenal in the UEFA Youth League this season before today’s fixture.
However, he was an unused substitute in the first team’s Champions League wins over Athletic Club and Olympiacos.
Arsenal opened the scoring inside four minutes as Harrison Dudziak converted a pass from Brando Bailey-Joseph.
The young Gunners nearly doubled their advantage in the 10th minute, when Bailey-Joseph picked out Osman Kamara, whose effort was blocked on the line.
Atletico drew level in the 18th minute through Sergio Vinatea’s long-range strike.
Dowman restored Arsenal’s lead from the penalty spot, and they held on to their advantage until half-time.
The Spanish side eventually levelled the scoring before the hour mark, when Sergio Esteban converted a penalty.
Atletico went ahead for the first time in the game when Ruben Gomez scored.
Arsenal were awarded a penalty ten minutes from time, which Dowman converted.
However, the 15-year-old’s heroics were undone by Jesus Barrios, who steered the ball home at the back post to hand Atletico all three points.
Arsenal have dropped to 30th in the Youth League standings, eight places adrift of a qualification spot for the knockout stage.
