A second driver indicted in the case of the fatal stabbing of Nantes supporter Maxime Leroy has received an 18-month suspended prison sentence and a five-year ban on possessing or carrying a weapon, approved on Wednesday morning.
According to L'Équipe, he faced counts of destroying evidence and committing violence, and will not go to prison.
A 31 December order sent him to a guilty-plea hearing, with a back-up trial set for 1 October if it failed. That trial will not be held after the sanctions were accepted and confirmed.
Initially heard as a witness, he was later indicted when investigators discovered his vehicle had a recording system and the videos had vanished. He was also accused of striking Leroy with a telescopic baton.
Separately, the VTC driver accused of fatally stabbing Leroy before Nantes v Nice has been sent by the investigating judge to the Loire-Atlantique assize court on a charge of murder. He appealed on 7 January. The Rennes appeal court’s investigation chamber has until 7 May to rule, and he remains in custody.
