Maycon accepts Atlético-MG offer, set to leave Corinthians

Midfielder Maycon will not continue at Corinthians in 2026. The midfielder is expected in Belo Horizonte in the coming hours for medical exams and to sign a three-season contract with Atlético-MG, according to information from ge.globo.

This Wednesday (7), Shakhtar Donetsk announced that it accepted the proposals presented by Corinthians and Atlético-MG and left the final decision in the hands of the player, who chose to sign with the club from Minas Gerais.

Besides being financially more advantageous, the offer from Atlético was seen by Maycon as the one that showed the greatest commitment to his signing. The player felt that the Corinthians management was slow to decide on his stay and was bothered by the back-and-forth during negotiations.

Shakhtar will release the athlete without immediate costs, retaining 50% of the economic rights. Maycon has a contract with the Ukrainian club until the end of 2027, but does not wish to return to the country due to the war with Russia.

At 28 years old, the midfielder was on loan to Corinthians until December 31. His stay at the São Paulo club was on track in the last weeks of 2025, but negotiations cooled after a change in the football department's management. The then-director Fabinho Soldado had agreed on a three-year deal, while his successor, Marcelo Paz, proposed a shorter contract of two seasons.

During this interval, Atlético-MG entered the negotiation, presented a proposal to Shakhtar, and showed willingness to sign a three-year agreement. This model also pleased the Ukrainian club, which sees more time to potentially profit from a future sale of the athlete.

Aware of the competition, Corinthians returned to the table and offered a three-season contract. Even so, amid the impasse, Maycon did not report to CT Joaquim Grava for the start of the 2026 pre-season.

A trusted player of coach Dorival Júnior, the midfielder was the captain of Corinthians in the 2025 Copa do Brasil victory. Revealed by the club from Parque São Jorge, Maycon has played 248 games and scored 18 goals for Timão, in addition to winning important titles: three Paulista Championships (2017, 2018, and 2025), one Brazilian Championship (2017), and one Copa do Brasil (2025).
