Kylian Mbappe was at the centre of Real Madrid’s 2-1 comeback win over Olympique de Marseille last night as he scored a brace to help the team turn the tide.

On a night when Los Blancos were unable to convert their open play chances, the Frenchman’s composure and expertise came to good use as he slotted the ball into the back of the net twice from the penalty spot.

In the end, Real Madrid did take home all three points, albeit with a lot of controversy. Xabi Alonso and Co., however, will not dig deep into whether the penalties were deserved or not and will now look to move to the next game.

Mbappe’s thoughts

Speaking to the media after the game, the brace-scorer Kylian Mbappe commented on the special night and how it felt to take all three points against the French side.

“It’s a pleasure to be here and live another night of the Champions League. A little complicated night because we were 10 men for a while, but we got that spirit out of the Champions League at the Bernabéu,” he began.

“It’s always like that at the Bernabéu, whatever happens. We always have the hope of being able to win. Today we won and we are very happy,” he added.

Speaking on how he felt personally for scoring two decision goals on the night, the French forward said,

“I feel very good. I don’t think much about being the leader, I think about being me. I want to help my teammates and the team. These are things that come naturally, that are not asked for.”

“I feel good on the team. There are many players younger than me and I hope I can help bring out their best version. I want us to go together in the same direction to win titles,” he added.

The talisman was then asked if Xabi Alonso demanded a lot of intensity from the team, to which he said,

“He wants us to recover the ball quickly. We have to understand what we do and, when we understand it, we have the determination to do it because we want to win.”

“We have good communication to know what we have to do and we do it for this shield,” he added.

He then elaborated on what the manager asked of him in particular, to which he made it clear that Alonso asked him to press with intensity.

“I always do what the coach wants. Today he asks me to press to help because we have a high block to recover many balls. We’re going to get more used to doing that, it’s going to come out easier and it’s going to help the team win titles.”

The player was then quizzed on the handball penalty incident, and he himself admitted that the rules and refereeing can be tricky in such situations.

“The issue of hands is very complicated. Sometimes they say they all whistle and then they don’t. It’s hard to find a logic. We follow the rule and if it’s a penalty it’s a penalty.”

“For me it is, but I can understand that there are people who say it is not, everyone is lost with that rule. Either it’s a hand or it’s not. But if there’s a penalty, I’ll throw it in and put it in, that’s it,” he added.

Finally, the player was asked how many goals he wished to score this season, to which he said,

“The maximum possible. I don’t set limits. I only want to help the team: if it’s by marking, marking; if it’s pressing, pressing; or if it’s assisting, assisting. I want to do everything the team needs.”
