However, just four minutes later Kylian Mbappé was dismissed for a terrible challenge.

The French forward needlessly lunged in reckless fashion, and was given his marching orders after a very brief review from the referee at the pitch-side monitor.

It is the 26-year-old's first red card since his move to Madrid in the summer, and means he is likely to miss the next three league games.

A tough week for Carlo Ancelotti's side has just got tougher, and they will now need to navigate the second half with 10 men if their title hopes are to remain alive.
