Manchester United have won all three of their Premier League games in October and now sit sixth in the league table after nine matches. The Red Devils have also collected 12 points at home this season, the most in the league so far.

After a year of struggle, Ruben Amorim’s side is finally showing promise. The Portuguese head coach invested heavily in attack this summer, with Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha joining his ranks.

It is the Cameroonian, however, who has taken Old Trafford by storm, scoring five goals in ten appearances across competitions and starting each of the nine Premier League games.

The 26 year old’s performances recently earned him the Premier League Player of the Matchweek award. His form has also caught the eye of a former Arsenal man.

Luke Shaw helping Bruno Fernandes flourish

Theo Walcott recently discussed United’s resurgence on It’s Called Soccer, highlighting the key role Luke Shaw is playing in Amorim’s set-up.

“The team are understanding the way to play in his system now. When you have three at the back, you always have to have one of the centre-backs coming out into the midfield to be a third midfielder,” said Walcott.

“Luke Shaw is that man doing that because he’s the one out of all the players that you trust to be able to cover as well.

“They need that if Bruno [Fernandes] and Cunha are going to work in the same team because I wasn’t so sure if they could really operate in the same team. It felt like two players that want to be in the same positions.

“However, once you get players who can step out, be confident and have that trust behind them, that’s no problem and this system works.”

Shaw has been an ever-present figure under Amorim this season, starting every Premier League game. The Englishman has already clocked up 758 minutes of first team action and has helped United cope with Lisandro Martinez’s absence. For context, the 30 year old, who is the club’s longest-serving player, managed just 587 minutes of football across competitions last season.

Mbeumo built for the Premier League

The former Arsenal winger went on to lavish praise on Cunha and Mbeumo, insisting that Arsenal should have signed the Cameroonian years ago.

“You have Cunha coming back and defending as well and Mbeumo who I think is outstanding. You look at players away from the Premier League who come into the Premier League, they take time,” said Walcott.

“These guys [like Mbeumo] were built for Premier League football. I think Mbeumo has been incredible and he’s a player Arsenal should have bought many years ago.”

“This United team are so confident. I got it so wrong, I thought it was going to be a typical United performance [against Brighton].

“However, they are starting to click and they’re missing quite a lot of players still which is worrying. We want to see United challenge, we do, it’s better for the league, it’s better for everyone and they’re exciting to watch now.”

United have registered the most shots on target (45) in the Premier League so far this season. They next face Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday, 1 November.
