McCoist can’t speak highly enough of ‘terrific’ United ace, but admits it’s in ‘everybody’s best interest’ that he leaves | OneFootball

Ally McCoist has had his say on his compatriot Scott McTominay’s impending move to Napoli, with the player already travelling to Italy today to complete his medical.

It’ll come as no surprise that the pundit is a huge fan of McTominay, as his contributions to the Scotland national team over the past two years have been second to none.

Yet, while he has heaped praise on the Manchester United academy graduate, McCoist does agree that it’s time he severed his 22-year association with the club.

McTominay, 27, joined the Reds’ youth setup at just five years old. He has never completed a loan spell, instead working his way through the ranks to become an integral first-team player. Erik ten Hag even awarded him the captaincy for the trip to Anfield last season for just the second time in his career – the first being in an FA Cup win over Watford in January 2021.

The Lancaster-born midfielder has been previously vocal about his family’s ties to United and how his relatives follow the club week in and week out, whether that be home, away or in Europe, so bidding farewell to the only club he’s ever known will undoubtedly pull at the heart strings when the time comes this week.

McCoist reacts to McTominay’s Serie A switch

Still, he’d decided that now is the time to draw the curtains on his Old Trafford tenure and embark on a new venture in Serie A – and he certainly has McCoist’s backing.

“I think he has been great for United, I really, really do,” McCoist told the talkSPORT panel.

“I think he has been terrific. I think – a young player coming through – he scored important goals. Brilliant for Scotland, by the way, brilliant for Scotland, McTominay’s goals.

“But I think looking at it now, I think his time is probably up at United, and I think it might be in everybody’s best interest because he is going to go and play somewhere, there’s no doubt about it. Good player.”
