Medhi Benatia has stepped down as OM's director of football, announcing on Sunday that he resigned last Monday. His exit comes four days after Roberto De Zerbi's departure was confirmed on Wednesday.

The 38-year-old said in a post that, after a long reflection, he ended his collaboration with the club on Monday 9 February. He cited a tense climate, mounting dissatisfaction and a rupture he regrets, adding that results are the only judge in Marseille and that he did not want to become a burden. He also noted that OM are still in the race despite Saturday's 2-2 draw with Strasbourg, with Champions League qualification within reach and the Coupe de France still a target, and said he will explain his choice in due course.

Benatia had been working with OM since November 2023.

OM are fourth in Ligue 1, and were eliminated from the Champions League at the end of January after a 0-3 defeat in Bruges.

A one-sided Classique ended 0-5 against PSG last Sunday. Those two setbacks counted in his decision.
