Medhi Benatia has stepped down as Olympique de Marseille sporting director, confirming the decision in a post on Instagram. His exit follows Roberto De Zerbi’s departure earlier in the week.
De Zerbi left by mutual consent in the early hours of Tuesday. Benatia had previously tied his future to the Italian, prompting questions over his continuation.
Benatia said he decided to leave on Monday, hours before De Zerbi’s exit.
After the 2-2 draw with RC Strasbourg Alsace on Saturday, amid fan protests, he confirmed he was moving on and stressed that his resignation was final rather than merely offered.
He added that he felt he had given his maximum professionally, but regretted not calming the atmosphere around a squad he believes is capable of meeting its objectives.
Marseille are now searching for a new manager and a new sporting director. Former Stade Rennais Habib Beye is the outstanding favourite for the managerial vacancy.
