It is a title that he has held in all but name for a year now. Medhi Benatia, technically an external consultant at Olympique de Marseille up until this point, is expected to be officially named sporting director of the club, according to a report from RMC Sport.
At the end of November 2023, with the club in crisis, Marseille hired former academy player Benatia to assume the role of the club’s sporting director, albeit as an external consultant. Since his arrival, he has overseen a reconstruction both on the field and behind the scenes. As well as an ambitious recruitment drive with some big-money arrivals, notably Mason Greenwood, Elye Wahi, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Adrien Rabiot, he was also behind the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi as manager.
However, his contract as an external consultant expires at the end of this month. Benatia is, however, not expected to leave the club. RMC Sport understands that he will sign a two-and-a-half-year deal to become OM’s sporting director, even though no deal has yet been concluded.
