Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria is reportedly travelling to England to finalise his transfer to Chelsea by undergoing a medical and signing his contract.
The 28-year-old has long been linked with the Blues and it now seems that a major breakthrough has been made.
Fabrizio Romano gave this deal his trademark ‘here we go’ last night, and this morning he’s posted another update.
See below for details as Romano says Chavarria is on his way to Chelsea for a medical and to put the finishing touches on this move…
Posting on his official X account, Romano said: “Pep Chavarría, on his way to England today for medical tests and contract signing at Chelsea. €19m plus €2m deal finalised last night, as revealed.”
Chelsea fans will no doubt be pleased that this saga now finally seems to be nearing an end after lengthy speculation linking them with Chavarria.
Chelsea needed a new signing like Chavarria this summer, with the west London giants having lost Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid earlier in the window.
It won’t be easy to replace a key player like Cucurella, who recovered from a slow start to life at Stamford Bridge to become a hugely important member of the squad.
Still, Chavarria also looks a fine talent and like someone who could make an immediate impact in English football.
Chelsea fans will also surely be pleased that the club moved for an experienced player like this, rather than replacing Cucurella with a youngster.
Despite this CFC ownership previously putting so much emphasis on recruiting for the future, there has been a shift in strategy this summer as some more proven names have also come in.
Morgan Rogers and Maxence Lacroix are players for here and now, while Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck are slightly surprising additions, but should prove useful experienced voices in the dressing room.
