Tokyo is a city of superlatives. Approximately 14 million people live within the city limits, and the entire metropolitan area is home to around 37 million. This makes Tokyo one of the largest metropolitan regions in the world.

Visitors to Tokyo experience a city that never sleeps. Famous neighborhoods like Shibuya with its world-famous intersection, the electronics and anime district of Akihabara, and the elegant shopping district of Ginza epitomize the metropolis’s enormous diversity.

Added to these are trendy neighborhoods like Shinjuku, with its imposing skyline and vibrant nightlife, as well as Asakusa, where the historic Senso-ji Temple offers a glimpse into traditional Japan. Tokyo looks back on an eventful history. Until the 19th century, the city was known as Edo and served as the seat of the powerful Tokugawa shogunate. With the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Edo was renamed Tokyo – which literally means “Eastern Capital” – and replaced Kyoto as Japan’s political center. After the devastating Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the severe destruction of World War II, the city was practically rebuilt from scratch.

BVB visits the National Stadium

Tokyo is also one of the country’s most important soccer hubs. Several professional clubs are based in the Japanese capital. FC Tokyo has been one of the flagship teams of Japanese soccer for many years. The club regularly thrills tens of thousands of spectators and is consistently among the J1 League teams with the highest attendance. The friendly match against Borussia Dortmund will be played at the Japanese National Stadium, which is considered one of the most modern sports arenas in all of Asia.

The stadium was newly built for the 2021 Olympic Games and has a capacity of approximately 68,000 spectators. For BVB, the arena provides the perfect stage to conclude its tour of Japan.
