Malmö FF goalkeeper Melker Ellborg has responded to the speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United, revealing that he is flattered by it.

United could sign another goalkeeper

During the summer transfer window, United secured the services of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.

Since his debut against Sunderland at the start of October, Lammens has started every game for the club and appears to have nailed down the starting spot.

Andre Onana, who was loaned out to Turkish outfit Trabzonspor, doesn’t seem to have a future at United. The same can be said about Altay Bayindir. United are believed to be open to offloading Bayindir either in January or the summer.

Should he depart, United will need to bring in cover to ensure there is sufficient depth in the goalkeeping department. A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Ellborg is on United’s radar.

Ellborg is on the radar of some of Europe’s heavyweights amid his outstanding performances for Malmö FF.

He was thrust into the spotlight in May after an injury to the first-choice shot-stopper. Ellborg kept clean sheets in his first four league starts. The Swede registered an impressive five consecutive clean sheets and conceded only once in seven games before being dropped to the bench when Robin Olsen returned from Aston Villa in July.

The report stated that United swooping in for Ellborg in January can’t be ruled out.

The 22-year-old spoke to Expressen and was asked about United being interested in snapping him up.

Ellborg reacts to United transfer rumours

He told the news outlet, “It’s of course flattering.”

“It came a little out of nowhere, but it’s definitely fun to be on those clubs’ radar. It’s awesome!”

Ellborg continued, “But for now, a rumour is just a rumour. As long as there’s nothing concrete, it’s not something I focus on.”

“The deal between me and my advisors is that I get on with it and focus on my own. They take care of the rest.”

If given the opportunity to play against Nottingham Forest in the Europa League on Thursday, Expressen argue it could allow United to take a closer look at Ellborg in action at the City Ground.

Ellborg said about this, “I think for me it works best to just be in the moment and focus on what I have to do. Of course, it’s flattering. You can see it as a carrot and a proof that you have done something well.”
