Memphis Depay attacked Athletico Paranaense’s synthetic pitch and mocked the officiating after Corinthians’ 1-0 win. According to Meu Timao, he took to X to vent his frustration.

The Dutch forward started on Thursday in the Brasileirão at Arena da Baixada, where Corinthians edged the hosts.

In his post he labelled the surface horrible and aimed sarcasm at referee Rodrigo José Pereira de Lima, before signing off by noting the three points.

Team-mate Rodrigo Garro also criticised the surface as a risk to players’ safety. The pitch had recently seen excess coconut fibre removed, a material used to maintain the artificial grass.

Corinthians’ frustrations with the officials centred on a flurry of cards and 13 minutes of second-half stoppage time. Assistant coach Lucas Silvestre was dismissed late on, while four players were booked.

This is not the first time Memphis has railed against synthetic turf. During the 2025 Paulista title celebrations against Palmeiras he called Allianz Parque’s pitch terrible, and he fronted a protest against artificial grass early last year.

Focus now turns to the Paulistão quarter-finals on Sunday at 20:30, when Corinthians visit Portuguesa at Canindé in a one-off tie for a semi-final place.
