Memphis criticises Corinthians board, says contract commitment was broken | OneFootball

Memphis Depay has criticised Corinthians after the club ended renewal talks, saying a commitment had been broken. The player said in a post that he was very disappointed.

On X he said president Osmar Stabile, plus the financial and legal departments, had agreed a new two-year deal. He tagged Stabile’s official account on Instagram.

He called the situation unacceptable and said he would speak publicly in the coming days, adding he would not let such behaviour go unpunished. His previous contract expired on 31 July.

Corinthians said in a statement signed by Stabile that the decision was taken solely to protect the club’s financial health.

In early August he arrived in São Paulo to complete formalities and medicals after weeks of negotiation.

A deal appeared close, with coach Fernando Diniz saying it was practically done and executive Marcelo Paz calling talks well advanced. Stabile later chose not to proceed, with indications behind the scenes that he was still seeking partners to make the deal viable.

A major hurdle was an active debt owed to Memphis from bonuses on his previous contract, more than R$ 42 million and potentially R$ 77 million with interest. During talks he waived additional charges, accepted a pay cut and agreed to instalments.

Signed in September 2024 amid a relegation fight, he played 79 games for Corinthians, starting 62, with 20 goals and 15 assists. Across two seasons he won the Campeonato Paulista, Copa do Brasil and Supercopa do Brasil.
