Memphis Depay said he was devastated after the Netherlands were eliminated from the World Cup by Morocco on penalties in Monterrey, having not featured. The player said in a post that he had not found the words to express how he felt about the way it ended.

The Netherlands' record scorer, the Corinthians forward totalled only 70 minutes across four matches at the tournament.

He arrived short of peak fitness after accelerating recovery from a right thigh injury sustained in March, and had limited game time for Corinthians before the World Cup.

His contract with Corinthians runs until 31 July and has not yet been renewed. Talks continued during his time with the national team, with optimism on both sides and only final details to be settled.

The forward has been granted a few days off before reporting for the club's training camp at CT Joaquim Grava.
