Memphis Depay has equalled Robin vanPersie as the Netherlands’ joint all-time top scorer after netting twice in an 8-0 hammering of Malta during Tuesday’s qualifier.
The Corinthians forward also set up a goal, taking his tally to 50 for his country. He’s now reached that milestone in 102 appearances (exactly the same number Van Persie managed).
Depay is now the eighth most-capped Dutch player, with only Wesley Sneijder (134 caps) ahead at the top of the list.
Other notable Dutch scorers include Klaas-Jan Huntelaar with 42 goals, Patrick Kluivert on 40, and Dennis Bergkamp and Arjen Robben, who both finished with 37.
Depay made his international debut in November 2013 in a friendly against Japan. His first goal came the following year, at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, scoring against Australia.
In total, the Dutch number 10 now has 29 assists to go with his 50 goals, meaning he’s been directly involved in 79 goals, averaging a contribution roughly every 97 minutes he’s been on the pitch.
