Memphis Depay has been omitted from Xavi Hernández’s first Netherlands squad since the World Cup, after the Spaniard replaced Ronald Koeman.

According to Meu Timao, many Dutch fans welcomed the call on the national team’s Instagram. He was overlooked for Crysencio Summerville, Brian Brobbey, newcomer Ruben van Bommel, plus Cody Gakpo and Noa Lang, while his main rival is Donyel Mallen of Roma, on six goals in five games this season.

Depay made the 2026 World Cup his priority, with Corinthians resting him at times. He had an uneven tournament, playing only three times off the bench, and his sole contribution was an assist for Summerville in the 5-1 win over Sweden.

After a round-of-32 defeat to Morocco, he went on holiday and began renewal talks with Corinthians. He returned on 20 August against Rosario Central, assisting Breno Bidon to secure a Libertadores quarter-final place.

Since then he has struggled for rhythm and was central to the exit against Estudiantes, missing a penalty after 10 minutes of second-half stoppage with Corinthians trailing 1-0.

With Libertadores and Copa do Brasil runs over, Corinthians now have more time on the training ground. They sit 14th on 32 points and host Fluminense on Sunday at 16:00 at Neo Química Arena in round 28. The Netherlands prepare for Nations League games against Germany, Serbia twice and Greece.
