The first was José dos Santos Lopes in 1938 in France, when he laid on goals in the 6-5 win over Poland and the 2-1 semi-final defeat to Italy. He and Brandão were Corinthians' pioneer World Cup participants.

In 1954 in Switzerland, Baltazar recorded one assist and struck Brazil's first goal of the tournament in the 5-0 victory against Mexico. In 1970 in Mexico, Rivellino delivered three assists and scored three times, with two versus Peru in the quarter-finals and one against Italy in the final.

At the 1974 World Cup in Germany, right-back Zé Maria crossed for Jairzinho in a 2-1 win over Argentina in the second phase, with Rivellino netting the opener. In 1982 in Spain, Sócrates set up a goal in the 4-1 defeat of Scotland.

The next assists arrived in 2006, when Ricardinho teed up Zé Roberto in Brazil's win over Ghana and Carlos Tevez supplied Lionel Messi's first World Cup goal in Argentina's 6-0 victory against Serbia and Montenegro. The Netherlands face Tunisia on Thursday at 20:00.
