Memphis Depay says he pushed to feature in Corinthians' derby with Palmeiras but will miss out as he continues his recovery, adding that his focus on the club extends beyond this year's World Cup.
The player said in a post that he had insisted on playing on Sunday, but it was not possible because of mistakes, calling the situation painful and frustrating. The message followed a cryptic post that had sparked criticism over a meme earlier on Saturday, and used a photo from his 2024 unveiling.
He added that Corinthians remain his priority and complained about misinformation, saying watching others discuss what he thinks or feels is not healthy. He also said work behind the scenes on positive projects has him excited about Brazil and the club.
Depay is in the final stretch of a deal that runs until 20 June, with no agreement yet on an extension. The club owe him about R$ 42 million and talks over how to settle it are currently frozen.
He has a grade two injury to his right thigh sustained on 22 March and is yet to make his debut under new head coach Fernando Diniz.
Corinthians face Palmeiras at Neo Química Arena on Sunday at 18:30 Brasília time in the 11th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
