Memphis to join Corinthians Monday, may face Santos after break

After representing the Netherlands national team during the FIFA international break, forward Memphis Depay is expected at the Dr. Joaquim Grava Training Center on Monday night. The player returns focused on preparations for the derby against Santos, which will be played on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. at Vila Belmiro, in the Brazilian Championship. The information was initially reported by Meu Timão and confirmed by Central do Timão.

During his time with the national team, Depay played a total of 85 minutes — 23 minutes in the win over Malta and 62 minutes against Finland. Even from afar, Corinthians’ performance department closely monitored the number 10’s minutes and physical condition, keeping an eye on the rest of the season and on preventing new injuries.

The concern stems from a recent history: in September, right after returning from the last international break, Depay suffered edema in the right hamstring, which sidelined him for four Timão matches.

Therefore, the Dutchman’s spot in the starting lineup is not yet guaranteed for the clash against Santos. Considering travel fatigue and his minutes on the pitch for the national team, the coaching staff is evaluating the possibility of the forward starting on the bench at Vila Belmiro.

For the derby, head coach Dorival Júnior, represented by assistant Lucas Silvestre due to a suspension, will be without Vitinho, who is still recovering from arthroscopy on his right knee, and the sidelined Héctor Hernández. Ángel Romero, who is on international duty with Paraguay, is also a doubt.

As a result, Timão’s attacking options to face Santos include Yuri Alberto, Gui Negão, Kayke, Talles Magno, and Memphis Depay himself. Santos and Corinthians face off this Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. at Vila Belmiro, for the 28th round of the Brazilian Championship.
