Memphis Depay used a mobile phone on the Corinthians bench during the 1-1 draw with Flamengo at Neo Química Arena, and was rebuked by the club’s coaching staff as such use is prohibited.

He had been substituted after 22 minutes of the first half with pain in his right thigh. After showering, he returned to the touchline in the second half and was seen using the device, later explaining on social media that it was to contact the Netherlands medical team.

He said he stepped out to show support for his team even though he could have remained in the dressing room because of the injury. He also expressed disappointment with the result and a determination to keep working for better days.

The CBF rulebook bars players, including substitutes, those replaced or sent off, from using electronic equipment or communication systems, except when an approved performance and monitoring system is permitted.

Memphis is in the Netherlands squad for friendlies against Norway and Ecuador in this Fifa window. The draw left Corinthians without a win in seven matches, their last victory coming on 19 February away to Athletico-PR. They face Fluminense on 1 April.
