Mendy the most worrying of Sevilla’s eight absences

Mendy will miss Sevilla’s game against Athletic on Saturday, the most worrying of the club’s eight absences and a significant problem for Matías Almeyda.

Almeyda named the same XI at Elche’s Martínez Valero as he did against Celta, his first repeated line-up of the season. As reported by as.com, there will be no third straight, with Mendy unavailable and previously untouchable in midfield.

Since arriving in Nervión, Mendy has featured in every league match except at San Sebastián. Then a muscular problem kept him out and Almeyda used Gudelj with Agoumé and Sow in midfield, dropping the back three. He could repeat that approach now, though defensive injuries include Marcao, who did face La Real, and Azpilicueta.

Mendy collected his fifth yellow card last weekend, so his return will come next week. Almeyda is mulling a stopgap, which could mean a system change, a start for Manu Bueno or moving Peque deeper.

Azpilicueta, Nianzou, Alfon, Alexis, Vargas, Marcao and Januzaj did not train on Thursday and are ruled out for Saturday. Mendy is training but will also be absent.

Meanwhile, the transfer window is drifting by with little movement at Sevilla.
