Mikel Merino, Piero Hincapie and Christian Norgaard all featured for their countries in the final round of international matches in 2025.
Versatile forward Merino played the first half as Spain dropped their first points of World Cup qualifying against Turkey in Seville. Arsenal teammates David Raya and Martin Zubimendi were unused substitutes.
Hincapie, tipped to deputise for the injured Gabriel in Arsenal’s upcoming matches, put in another assured performance as Ecuador defeated New Zealand 2-0 in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
It was the defender’s seventh personal clean sheet in a row and the 23-year-old could be in line to start Sunday’s north London derby, following the news of Gabriel’s injury blow whilst on international duty with Brazil.
Christian Norgaard came off the bench but was powerless to prevent Denmark losing to Scotland in their final World Cup qualifier. It means the Danes now face a play-off in order to reach next summer’s finals.
Former Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney scored a beauty to give Scotland the lead in stoppage time, before a further goal ensured a 4-2 victory for the Scots.
Leandro Trossard played the final 20 minutes of Belgium’s rampant 7-0 success of Liechtenstein in Liege, claiming his 50th cap in the process.
Ethan Nwaneri scored a neat lob in England under-21s 4-0 victory over Slovakia in their qualifier, while goalkeeper Tommy Setford also played in the full match.
Exciting teenage talent Max Dowman played 69 minutes in England under-19s 4-0 victory over Scotland, continuing his impressive development at England youth level.
