Lionel Messi set a new Major League Soccer (MLS) record in Inter Miami’s 4-2 victory against Toronto FC on Saturday.

The Argentina international scored a goal and added two assists, smashing Sebastian Giovinco’s record by becoming the fastest player in MLS history to reach 100 goal contributions.

The 38-year-old achieved the feat in just 64 matches, 31 fewer than Giovinco.

Messi was at the peak of his powers on Saturday, delivering a standout performance to lead his side to success at the BMO Field.

Rodrigo De Paul opened the scoring in the 44th minute, before Messi set up Luis Suarez and Sergio Reguilon to put the visitors 3-0 ahead.

The experienced forward then got in on the action, finishing clinically past the goalkeeper after exchanging possession with De Paul.

Emilio Aristizabal left the bench to bag a brace, but Miami won the game.

The Herons went into the fixture on the back of a disappointing 4-3 home loss to Orlando City last weekend.

However, they bounced back to pick an excellent victory that leaves them third in the Eastern Conference.

Messi will turn 39 in June, but age is not impacting his performances.

He has already bagged 10 goals and three assists in 13 appearances across all competitions this season.

His overall goals tally for Miami has now reached 87 in 101 matches.
