A few weeks after announcing his international exit, following more than 20 years with the national team, Lionel Messi will make one last appearance for Argentina in a farewell fixture. He had said the World Cup final against Spain last summer was his final outing as captain.

The federation announced that he will be called up for a send-off friendly in Argentina in early October, following discussions with head coach Lionel Scaloni and Messi’s acceptance of the invitation.

World Cup winners from the 2022 squad who played alongside him, and their families, will also be invited to mark the occasion.

The squad includes Julián Álvarez, De Paul, Lautaro and 'Dibu' Martínez, with Franco Mastantuono returning.

Scaloni’s side play Bolivia on 30 September, Burkina Faso on three October and Benin on six October, the date set for Messi’s official farewell.
