Argentine champion Lionel Messi (38 years old) has criticized some players’ obsession with individual records, stating that this can make them lose sight of the main goal: team success and winning trophies.

In an interview with American broadcaster NBC, Messi said: "Many players become obsessed with individual records and end up forgetting the main objective, which is the team's success and winning competitions."

He added: "To break records, the team must first achieve victories."

Regarding the upcoming World Cup, Messi explained: "Playing at World Cup 2026? I don’t know yet… I’d like to be there and in good shape, and above all, to be an important pillar to help the national team if I do take part."

He specified: β€œWhen I start preseason with Inter Miami next season, I’ll see if I’m 100% ready and able to contribute effectively to my club and the national team, then I’ll make my decision.”

As a reminder, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner recently extended his contract with Inter Miami for three more seasons, keeping him at the American club until December 2028.
