Club Universidad Nacional head coach Gustavo Lema has revealed that Liverpool made an approach to sign Cesar Huerta from the Mexican side this summer.
Lema has claimed the 23-year-old, who scored 11 goals in 37 Liga MX appearances in 2023/24, was under consideration by the Reds during the summer window. Liverpool signed Federico Chiesa from Juventus to add to their attacking options but reportedly made an approach for fellow forward Huerta.
However, tudn.com claim the deal fell through after Championship side Sunderland rejected the offer to take Huerta on loan for the current campaign as part of the deal.
“El Chino (Cesar Huerta) was scouted by one of the best clubs in the world and that is a source of pride,” Lema said.
“What are you going to tell people? That you have a player who was scouted by Liverpool? No, people want to win and that is their right. We cannot tell people anything.”
Huerta is a 23-year-old winger who plays his club football for Club Universidad Nacional, also known as Pumas UNAM.
Huerta, whose nickname is ‘Chino’, has scored 14 goals in 66 appearances across all competitions since arriving from C.D. Guadalajara, with 2023/24 a breakout campaign. He has earned 10 caps for Mexico at senior level, scoring once.
