Mexico’s football federation has warned that any Liga MX player who fails to report for Wednesday’s national-team camp in Mexico City will be left out of the 2026 World Cup squad, according to L'Équipe.

Head coach Javier Aguirre has called 20 home-based players to the federation’s High Performance Centre in Mexico City. The squad will prepare friendlies against Ghana on 22 May, Australia on 30 May and Serbia on 4 June, the last before the tournament starts on 11 June.

Toluca pair Jesús Gallardo and Alexis Vega were expected to miss the call-up as they have the Concacaf Champions League semi-final second leg against Los Angeles FC, who won the first leg 2-1.

The tie is scheduled for Wednesday night in Toluca, 3.30am in France, 30 minutes before the camp’s official start in the capital. Their likely absence angered Chivas, whose five internationals will miss Saturday’s Liga MX quarter-final second leg against Tigres after a 3-1 first-leg defeat.

Chivas president Amaury Vergara ordered Raúl Rangel, Luis Romo, Brian Gutiérrez, Roberto Alvarado and Armando González to return to Guadalajara to prepare. In February, Liga MX clubs had agreed to release internationals after the regular phase and after the Concacaf semi-final first legs.

Toluca’s hierarchy asked the federation on Tuesday for an exemption for their players, which Vergara viewed as a breach of that deal. He said on X that agreements only hold when all parties respect them.
