A new era is unfolding at Athletic. President Jon Uriarte was re-elected unopposed and Ernesto Valverde is leaving. As reported by as.com, he will be succeeded by the German coach Terzic, with the goalkeeping picture among the first decisions.

Unai Simón remains Spain’s first-choice and Lezama has produced Julen Agirrezabala and Alex Padilla. Athletic are again set to have three goalkeepers under contract next season. A review of the position is needed.

Agirrezabala was injured during his loan at Valencia and will miss the run-in. Valencia are moving to extend Dimitrievski and avoid a purchase option said to be around 12 million. The Macedonian has since emerged as their saviour after previously slipping into the background.

Padilla has used the Copa del Rey to gain experience after Agirrezabala’s departure. Simultaneous injuries to Simón and Agirrezabala at the start of 24-25 pushed him into the team and he delivered, producing notable displays against Getafe and Barcelona before rotating back out.

In January 2025 he joined Pumas on loan to maintain rhythm and minutes, leaving a strong impression. He also received a call-up from that country’s national team. He totalled 1,620 minutes across 18 matches.

This season Padilla logged 510 minutes in the Copa del Rey with one clean sheet, showing improvement with his feet and decision-making. As the campaign closes, interest has re-emerged from Mexico. Padilla is under contract until 2029 and now awaits what Terzic and Mikel González decide.
