Scorers: Romo 1′, 23′, Pineda 52′, Chávez 63′
After a tumultuous week in Mexican football, El Tri were tasked with lifting the mood in the nation with a solid start to the 2023 Gold Cup campaign, and they delivered.
It took just 60 seconds for Luis Romo to thrash his effort from the edge of the box into the back of the net and set the NRG stadium alight.
Mexico remained dominant after Romo’s opener, and they found their second goal just 20 minutes later, as Romo headed home at the back post to complete his first-half brace.
After the break, El Tri continued to pile on, and all but drove the final nail into the Honduras coffin less than ten minutes into the second-half through a clinical Orbelín Pineda strike.
Things only got worse for Honduras past the hour mark, as Luis Chávez fired home Mexico’s fourth of the night from close range, capping off a dominant Mexico performance to take the lead in Group B.
Elsewhere in Group B, Haiti snatched a stoppage time victory against Qatar in Houston to take a big step towards qualification to the knockout rounds.
Group B action resumes on Thursday.
