The club said in a statement that Michael Bambang Hartono died in Singapore on Wednesday, aged 86. He was co-owner of Serie A side Como with his brother Robert, and the team are currently fourth.
Robert Budi Hartono, two years his junior and ranked 71st in the world, now becomes sole owner.
The Hartono brothers made their fortune in the tobacco industry, then moved into football in 2019 by buying Como, newly up from Serie D to Serie C, through their company Sent Entertainment.
Backed by the Indonesians, the club climbed the divisions and secured promotion to Serie A in summer 2024.
Their rise has been matched by heavy investment, with the brothers posting a net spend of nearly 110 million on transfers this season, a record in Italy. Outside English and Saudi clubs, only Real Madrid and Galatasaray have spent more.
