Michael Carrick faces a significant injury concern over £73.7m striker Benjamin Sesko ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip to Sunderland, after the forward was forced off against Liverpool.

Manchester United agreed a deal with RB Leipzig worth an initial £66.3m plus add-ons for the Slovenia international, who has become an important part of Carrick’s attack this season.

Sesko struck United’s second in the 3-2 win over Liverpool, taking his league tally to 11 and 12 in all competitions. He was hurt before the break following a challenge from Ibrahima Konate near the corner flag, crashed into the advertising hoardings and did not return after half-time.

Carrick said Sesko took a bang to his shin when he fell down the side of the pitch. It is an issue the club have been managing for some time and the latest impact caught the same spot, occurring when he was pushed into the hoarding and down the dip.

United had welcomed Matheus Cunha and Luke Shaw back into the starting XI after injury concerns, but Sesko’s withdrawal presents another problem before the trip to Wearside. Kobbie Mainoo later hit the winner as preparations now turn towards Saturday at the Stadium of Light.
